Tool Library

How it works

Why a Tool Library?
Having a lending library for tools reflects a core value of Sustainable Macleod for 3 reasons:

  • the promotion of non-polluting garden and workshop equipment
  • the impact on lowering individual consumerism
  • working together as a community to tackle climate change

Battery-charged tools also assist older members with arthritis or other degenerative diseases, and people with physical disabilities, to stay active.

What’s in the Tool Library?

Sustainable Macleod has a wide variety of garden and DIY tools available for loan to our members. New tools will be added during the year so please check back often.

Borrowing and fees
Tools will be loaned for 1 week at a time.
Borrowing of tools and safety equipment is free as a benefit of Sustainable Macleod membership ($30 per calendar year).
However there is a maintenance fee for most (but not all) tools. This covers sharpening of tools, replacement of batteries, whipper- snipper line, cleaning and maintenance materials, registration of the trailer etc:

  • $2 for manual tools such as secateurs and pruning equipment
  • $5 for electric and battery-operated tools
  • $10 for the trailer

All tools need to be returned with:

  • the batteries fully charged
  • both the body of all tools and the underside of mowers, whipper-snippers etc cleaned of debris
  • blades wiped and cleaned with methylated spirits

There is a $5 cleaning fee for tools returned uncleaned but also a bucket of cleaning equipment at the garden for this purpose. We prefer that tools are returned ready to be re-loaned immediately both for fast turnover and to save the time of Tool Librarians all of whom have other responsibilities at the garden.
