Queensland Fruit Fly alert – December

Nov 26, 2025 | December, QLD Fruit Fly

This is the critical month for prevention of QFF in stone fruit and other soft fruits such as figs, loquats and cherries (assuming there is a 45 day window before ripening). Also protect citrus – especially lemons, cumquats and early tomatoes.

Netting is the best strategy as insect exclusion netting prevents QFF gaining access to the fruit. Net sleeves can be effective but the risk is that QFF will inject their eggs into fruit touching the net.

Top up Ceratraps or other types of protein traps as QFF need a protein feed before mating.

Spray with kaolin clay (sold as Overhaul at Bulleen Art and Garden), covering all sides of the fruit. This washes off easily in a sink of warm water.
