Queensland Fruit Fly alert – May

As the photo above shows there are still plenty of Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) around. In this dry lure from a pomegranate tree in my back garden, there are at least 40 males and in a second lure in a lime tree in my front garden, there are over 30 males. These have landed in the lures in the last couple of months (since emptying the lures 2 weeks ago there are even more). I have harvested over 300kg of fruit and veg this season with no infestation and still have plenty of fruit loved by QFF on my trees – persimmons, feijoas, guavas, pomegranates and citrus which needs protecting.
This is the time to put out Wild May to mop up any males young enough to survive over winter. Wild May can be purchased online from Sustainable Macleod at cost price and collected Wednesday or Saturday afternoons.
Use netting as the primary defence because if QFF cannot get to the fruit, it cannot sting!
