Sustainable Macleod’s Tomato List 2024
16 varieties for you to choose from
The following tomato varieties are being grown by Sustainable Macleod for the 2024 season. Financial members are entitled to 6 FREE plants on Saturday 14 September – Tomato Gala Day.
Come to the Sustainable Macleod Community Garden between 2pm – 4.30pm to choose your tomato plants. Tomato plants are also for sale if you want more, plus other vegie seedlings, herbs, berries, turmeric, galangal etc.
In Banyule, you must protect your tomato fruit from Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF). Tomatoes can be netted at planting as they are self-fertile. We recommend insect exclusion netting 6 metres wide, with 2mm x 2mm weave. This must be weighed down around the hem with soil, mulch, bricks or timber to prevent the QFF from crawling underneath it.
We sell this netting off-the-roll at cost price, as a service to the community. Go to our shop to purchase this, as well as lures and baits to protect against QFF. Action needs to be taken from July onward to reduce QFF numbers. Other fruits and vegetables should be netted as soon as pollinated.
We are only growing cherry and medium-sized tomatoes this year as Queensland Fruit Fly generally attacks large ones. Cherry tomatoes are relatively immune, but to be safe, net them. Medium-sized tomatoes must be netted.
Seed is saved from our previous season and fermented to remove any pathogens that might be present. This ensures you receive healthy, disease-free plants and that the plants are well-adapted to Macleod conditions.
